Acne

Acne is an inflammatory skin disease that causes pimples, on the shoulders, face, back, chest, neck, and upper arms.

Types of acne

Acne varies in the level of pain, size, and color.

The following are types of acne:

Whiteheads – these are small protrusions that stay under the skin.

Papules – these are pink and small bumps, which are visible on the skin’s surface.

Blackheads – these are black and visible acne, which appear on the skin’s surface.

Pustules – pastures have a red base with pus at the top. Also, they’re visible on the skin’s surface.

Causes of acne

Acne is a hormonal condition caused by an ‘androgenic’ hormone. This hormone becomes active during the puberty or teenage years. The hormones, oil glands, fatty acids, and bacteria on the skin cause acne. The common areas for acne are the face, shoulders, chest, back, and areas with oil glands.

While acne is a physiologic incident, some conditions may worsen the condition. This includes:

  • Fluctuating hormone levels during menstrual periods in women.
  • Prodding or picking acne lesions
  • Clothing such as sports helmets, hats, and headgear

Treatment

The treatment depends on the type of acne and how severe it is.

Mild acne treatment

Your doctor will recommend over-the-counter (OTC) medications for mild acne. This includes gels, pads, soaps, lotions, and creams. Before applying these medications, clean the affected area properly.

For oily skin, your doctor may recommend Alcohol-based gels.

OTC acne medications may contain some active ingredients, which includes

  • Benzoyl peroxide
  • Resorcinol
  • Salicylic acid
  • Retin-A
  • Sulfur and Azelaic acid

Treating moderate to severe acne

A dermatologist or skin specialist can treat more severe cases of acne. They may recommend a cream or gel similar to OTC remedies but stronger. Other treatments include topical or oral antibiotics, Isotretinoin, and topical antimicrobials.

Prevention

  • Avoid popping or picking pimples, as this cause scarring.
  • Wash your face at most two times a day with acne soap and warm water.
  • Avoid oil-based products and use face products for sensitive skin.
  • Avoid touching your skin all the time.

Yes, acne is a skin condition that can cause a lot of distress. But with the right treatment, you will have clear and smooth skin.
